What’s that sound? Can you believe your eyes?
Once-in-a-lifetime experience: Yattokame Festival.
Same ol’town, same ol’streets.
Faint sounds drifting to your ears, lyrical echoes beyond time.
Kyogen and other performing arts nurtured by the Tokugawa
of Owari thrive on: historical culture alive in Nagoya.
Vivid phantoms, connecting the past and future,
venturing from city nooks, fragments of memory now appear

Once again, this year, we welcome the Yattokame Festival.
Faint sounds drifting to your ears, lyrical echoes beyond time.
Murmuring from alleys, glowing tales speak of another Nagoya.
Your chance, your chance, your chance of a lifetime:
on the street, things you will never see or hear again.
The town’s a stage to enjoy the place of art, the place to visit, Nagoya.
Singing songs from the back alleys,
let this year’s journey begin.

Performance In The City
From the beginning…
Much of Japan’s performing arts emerged from the bustling streets from which the performers formed a cultural community. The modern day streets still maintain that culture, and this is where this project was born. The performances in this project re-ignite the traditions!
Traditional Performing Arts
The world of Japanese performing arts is very deep indeed.
The art of Noh was patronized by the ruling samurai caste, and admired by the townsfolk. Without seeing it, you cannot fully appreciate its traditional role or craft, nor can you understand the roots of this city. The world of Noh is a world beyond your wildest dreams, a world that lives on, in Nagoya City.

Tsuji Kyogen (Traditional Street Comedy Skits) ~Big Laughs in a Big City~
The comedy performing art of Kyogen originated in Nagoya with the formation of the Izumi Ryu performance troupe. It remains Japans’ oldest remaining form of comedy performance, unchanged since the days of old. The charming characters are lovable, and deliver one great laugh after another. While Kyogen was performed in Noh theatres, Tsuji Kyogen was performed on the streets, and so returns to its roots for the Yattokame Festival.

Music was always there to make a good time better, or to ease the pain of hard times. Can you cast your mind back to the castle town? Noh: Kusanagi. Shite lead actor, Ibi Masayoshi (Hosho School)
Story from medieval legend about one of the three sacred treasures.
As a prayer for peace in the land, Eshin no Sozu, a monk from Mt. Hiei, is undertaking a cycle of chanting the Golden Light Sutra at Atsuta Jingu Shrine. A pair of flower vendors, husband and wife come by. They reveal themselves as deities, one is the guardian of the sacred Kusanagi Grasscutter Sword, the other a nymph who can extend life. Then they disappear. During the night the spirits of Yamato Takeru and Princess Tachibana appear to express thanks for Sozu’s chanting. A scene is re-enacted: the Kusanagi is used to mow down surrounding reeds to hold back an enveloping fire and then is wielded to direct flames at the enemy. This mythical story remains now only in the repertoire of the Hosho School.

Play commentary available on free-loan headsets (Japanese & English)

Hawker swops roles with a feudal lord!? Enjoy the vendor calls!
On his own, the daimyo feudal lord, needs a sword carrier. When seaweed vendor from Obama passes, he buys his goods and tries to force him to carry his sword. Refusing to be treated as a servant, the vendor draws the sword and threatens the daimyo. The daimyo is forced to mimic the melodic vendor calls and sell seaweed. The distinctive calls are the highlight of the piece.

Hometown melodies. Min'yo song and dance
In the mid-1970s, min'yo folk-style singing enjoyed a boom. It was popular on TV, radio, and stages all over the country. When the popularity subsided, the style soon became outmoded and performers had a hard time: most of the min'yo troupes that had been thrown together now fell apart. Enduring that bitter experience, fascinated by the charm of the music, four talented groups in Nagoya have remained true to original min'yo and committed to keeping the tradition alive. They authentically perform min'yo from Nagano, Gifu, and Mie prefectures. In addition, enthusiastic young singers, the voices of tomorrow, along with dancers, through folk song and folk dance colorfully tell stories that reveal the character of places in Japan. For example, they express life in the Snow Country and perform Tsugaru hand dancing.

The Story of Owari Confectionery
Travel through the living tradition of Owari Japanese sweet-making
This year, have a sweet time going around Nagoya’s famous Japanese confectionery shops. Sample the subtle sweetness of wagashi at a variety of shops, some in business since feudal times, some large and famous, and others more local: all are well-loved by the people of Nagoya. Food writer Yamamoto Masuhiro tells stories that underlie wagashi, confectionery that reaches back in time to present unchanged sights, textures, and flavors. People continue to love Japanese sweets made, just as they used to be made, by these expert confectioners.
Conception and planning: Yamamoto Masuhiro, food writer and rakugo researcher
Wouldn’t it be fun to explore the traditional wagashi legacy of Nagoya? I wanted both to experience the sights, textures, and flavors of sweets that have been so loved for so long, and to ask the creators about the back stories of their creations.
