Roll Up, Roll Up, Step right this way,...
to the Yattokame Festival, where the city streets become the stage
At last the Yattokame Festival is about to begin.
History, culture, and traditional entertainments, such as Kyogen comedy, cultivated by the Owari Tokugawa clan during the Edo period, have returned to the streets of modern-day Nagoya City. The past, the present, and the future have all been connected, providing an eye opening experience. Voices from the past can once again be heard, and everyday city scenes are set to reveal unusual stories to make you aware of the other “face” of Nagoya, the cultural, imaginative, spiritual, entertaining side handed down from long ago.
For the Yattokame Festival, the entire city becomes a living stage. Old traditions and performing arts bring wonder and laughter back to the city streets of Nagoya! So,..Roll up, roll up, step right this way,….

Yattokame Festival committee.

Performance In The City
From the beginning…
Much of Japan’s performing arts emerged from the bustling streets from which the performers formed a cultural community. The modern day streets still maintain that culture, and this is where this project was born. The performances in this project re-ignite the traditions!
Traditional Performing Arts
The world of Japanese performing arts is very deep indeed.
The art of Noh was patronized by the ruling samurai caste, and admired by the townsfolk. Without seeing it, you cannot fully appreciate its traditional role or craft, nor can you understand the roots of this city. The world of Noh is a world beyond your wildest dreams, a world that lives on, in Nagoya City.

Tsuji Kyogen (Traditional Street Comedy Skits) ~Big Laughs in a Big City~
The comedy performing art of Kyogen originated in Nagoya with the formation of the Izumi Ryu performance troupe. It remains Japans’ oldest remaining form of comedy performance, unchanged since the days of old. The charming characters are lovable, and deliver one great laugh after another. While Kyogen was performed in Noh theatres, Tsuji Kyogen was performed on the streets, and so returns to its roots for the Yattokame Festival.

Ao no Yuragi LED candlelight Noh Performance
Experience a Noh and Kyogen stage, lit in soft lighting, to recreate an atmosphere of old. Noh and Kyogen performances are generally set on wide, bare stages with minimal lighting. The background is a simple, painted pine tree. This allows you to focus on the characters, action and chanting, and to use your imagination. So too with Kyogen, although being a comedy, the action can be a little quicker, and becomes more raucous too.
This time, modern technology and ancient arts come together. Blue LED lighting is being used to represent the rivers and sea, a key point in the Noh and Kyogen being performed, adding to the beauty of the performances
